Cataract and Intraocular Lenses
A cataract is the gradual clouding of the eye's lens; in surgery the clouded lens is removed and an artificial intraocular lens is placed. This page describes smart lenses (trifocal and EDOF intraocular lenses) among the lens options, for information only.
Smart lenses
What is a smart lens?
"Smart lens" is an everyday expression for intraocular lenses that are not monofocal and aim to help with vision at more than one distance. Trifocal lenses offer three focal points for near, intermediate and distance vision; EDOF (extended depth of focus) lenses create a single extended range of focus.
The choice of lens is made with the physician after an examination, according to the structure of the eye, corneal and retinal findings, daily visual needs and expectations. Each lens type can have its own characteristics, such as halos and glare, which are discussed before the decision.
This page is for information only; results vary from person to person.
- Trifocal
- Three focal points for near, intermediate and distance vision.
- EDOF
- Extended depth of focus; a continuous range of vision at distance and intermediate range.
- Monofocal and monofocal-plus
- A single focal point; a monofocal-plus lens adds limited help at intermediate range.
- Assessment
- Biometry, corneal mapping and a retinal examination.
