Laser Vision Correction

Laser vision correction is the common name for procedures that reshape the cornea with a laser to reduce refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. This page describes SMILE PRO, one of the methods, and for which eyes it may be considered, for information only.

SMILE PRO

What is SMILE PRO?

SMILE PRO is a laser vision correction procedure referred to as the current version of the SMILE method, which is based on lenticule extraction. The laser creates a thin piece of tissue (a lenticule) inside the cornea; it is removed through a small incision and the change in the cornea's shape reduces the refractive error. No flap is lifted on the corneal surface, as it is in LASIK.

The method is defined for myopia and for astigmatism that comes with myopia. Which method is suitable is decided from examination findings such as the degree of the refractive error, corneal thickness and the corneal map. PRK and LASIK are options within the same assessment.

This page is for information only; not every eye is suitable for this procedure, results vary from person to person and the decision is made with the physician after an examination.

How it works
A thin piece of tissue created inside the cornea with a laser is removed through a small incision.
Who it is considered for
Adults with myopia, with or without astigmatism, whose corneal structure is found suitable.
Who it may not suit
People with a thin or irregular cornea, suspected keratoconus or a refractive error that is still changing.
Assessment
Corneal topography, thickness measurement and a detailed eye examination.
